On July 1, 2002, I began driving from Boston, Massachusetts to Gilbert, Arizona. As I drove west, making my way across the United States, I noticed that the appearance of free-standing plastic ice cream cones outside of the local Dairy Queens and Tastee Freezes was becoming more frequent. As I continued westward, these plastic ice cream cones grew larger. Each time I encountered one of these behemoths, I exclaimed, “God, what a photo-op!” Inspired, I invariably maneuvered my vehicle through the drive-thru, ordered a chocolate-dip cone and ate it as I traveled further toward my destination. At one stop, the plastic ice cream cone was actually displayed on it’s own platform, complete with a red guard-rail to protect it from on-lookers who might be tempted to touch. What a sight (site)! Interestingly, I never made a single image of the giant plastic ice cream cone phenomenon. I think I was too busy enjoying my ice cream. My smile is crooked and my face is red.
