My journey took me across the country to stay with my family who live in Gilbert, Arizona. The cross-country drive was my flight from the constrictions of the more-than-nine-year infantilizing captivity of graduate school. I defended my Ph.D. dissertation on December 20, 2001. Unfortunately for my plotted escape, I was teaching high school at that time and so I had to wait until school was out for the summer to embark on my drive of freedom (cue Alice Cooper, School's Out here).
